As a certified B Corporation, Galileo—your favorite local camp—is part of a global movement of people using business as a force for good. We stand alongside other for-profit companies that use the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. There are more than 3,200 B Corps in 150 industries and 71 countries around the world.

So what does this really mean? Certified B Corporations hold themselves to the highest, verified standards of performance, transparency, and accountability.

In honor of our eighth anniversary as a B Corp and March being B Corp Month, we’re highlighting eight ways we #choosetoB, both on our teams and at camp.

Eight ways we #choosetoB:

#1: Since day one, equity has been built into the foundation of our business model.

Ever since our first summer in 2002, Galileo has reserved 7-10% of our camper spots for kids from low-income families. In 2020, we’re shooting to make this a whopping 22% through our Innovation for All program, with a new component for 25% off for families of school, non-profit, and government employees.

#2: We’re improvement enthusiasts.

Okay, so if you’re on our team or one of our families, this one isn’t a surprise to you. But did you know that we also survey our HQ staff four times a year, then review those results as an entire company during all-staff meetings? We aren’t perfect, but think transparency and accountability are just a few of the reasons why an astounding 99% of our HQ staff say they feel proud to work on our team.

#3: We practice what we teach.

Those call and response phrases you hear at camp? Yep, we use them regularly at our HQ offices too. Yet practicing what we teach goes beyond fun camp traditions. We choose to center our business on the same values we teach at camp. Each day, we show up and support each other to be visionary, courageous, collaborative, determined, and reflective for our work, and the world.

#4: We’re always learning, and freely sharing what we learn.

What do Stanford, Teach for America, Cal Academy of Sciences, Maker Ed, and 100Kin10 have in common? They’ve all been partners of Galileo. From curriculum development to recruiting to refining business practices—we believe it matters who we choose to learn with and from.

#5: This is where leaders develop.

Ever heard us say, “growing up Galileo?” That couldn’t be truer when listening to the heartbeat of our company—our people. We strive to promote from within, keeping an eye toward developing our talent, from our summer interns to our executive team In fact, over 55% of our camp program directors and almost 40% of our headquarters staff started on one of our summer teams.

#6: Our goal is radical inclusion.

Galileo has always maintained a 50/50 gender ratio of our campers, and it doesn’t stop there. We seek to intentionally create inclusive camps for our staff and campers, centered on a shared set of inclusion tenets and series of staff-wide training and education.

#7: Limitless expense accounts? No. Free camp? Yes.

In addition to that all-staff perk, we also offer year-round staff a comprehensive benefits package that includes top-tier medical plans starting at zero cost to employees, 401k with employer contribution, 20+ paid days off per year (in addition to holidays), flexible work schedules and locations, and more. Check out current openings.

#8: We laugh at ourselves—a lot.
