Project challenge:

Object Pictionary

Suggested Ages: K – 2nd Grades

Transform your junk drawer into a game of Pictionary! This fun group game will flex your creative muscles as you make improvised images while your friends and family guess what you’re creating! It can be challenging to create a picture from paperclips or pennies, so BE DETERMINED and don’t give up!

Engaging Design-It-Yourself projects to inspire young innovators

This is no ordinary DIY project for kids: It’s a step toward becoming an innovator.

Every Galileo Design-It-Yourself Challenge teaches the same techniques and mindsets that professional designers an engineers, artists and chefs use in their work. With skills like these, we believe you can change the world.

Get Involved—For Grown Ups

Materials list:

Help your child find these materials or a close substitute:

  • 10+ small, assorted objects (paper clips, rubber bands, coins, pencils, etc.)

Activity Steps:

Use these to keep your innovator on track as they create:

    1. Gather 10 assorted small objects. More objects and greater variety is better!
    2. All the players decide on a category such as ‘animals.’
    3. One person silently thinks of an object within that category, then arranges the available objects to create that thing.
    4. All other players guess what is being created as it’s being made. If the other players can’t guess correctly, be determined to rework your design until they guess right.
    5. The first player to guess correctly wins and gets to make the next picture!
    6. After a few rounds, decide on a new category and repeat.

Guiding Questions:

If your child is stuck, try asking these questions to help them keep on innovating:

  • What are the main features of the thing you’re imagining? How can you use the given objects to emphasize that more in your picture?
  • What if you try using different materials?
  • What if you try showing a different angle or part of the thing you’re imagining? (For example: a cat head instead of the whole cat or a car from side view instead of front view)

More Ideas:

Whatever the project there’s always an opportunity to add your own twists or extensions. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Step it up! Instead of one word challenges try categories that involve creating more complex images like movies, books, or songs.
  • Try a timed challenge. Have the person arranging objects write a list 10 things to make instead of just one. See how many they can get everyone to guess in 2 minutes!

Wrap Up Questions:

Lock in the learning by asking your child these questions about their project and how they practiced the featured Innovator’s Mindset element:

  • What was your favorite picture someone made during this game? What made it the best?
  • Which idea was the hardest to make out of the objects? Were you able to stay determined to keep trying until everyone guessed it? If not, what are some other ideas you think you could have tried if you had another chance?

SHARE!

The last step in the Gallieo Innovator’s Process is SHARE. Great learning can come from sharing successes and failures—to solidify your own experience as an innovator and to inspire others.
