Project challenge:

color-themed photo collage

Suggested Ages: 3rd – 5th Grades

Look through the lens of innovation as you create a picture perfect work of art! In this challenge you’ll take color themed photos and arrange them into a digital collage. You’ll need to BE REFLECTIVE by thinking about the most interesting angles to photograph each object and how to arrange the photos in the most eye-catching way.

Engaging Design-It-Yourself projects to inspire young innovators

This is no ordinary DIY project for kids: It’s a step toward becoming an innovator.

Every Galileo Design-It-Yourself Challenge teaches the same techniques and mindsets that professional designers an engineers, artists and chefs use in their work. With skills like these, we believe you can change the world.

Activity GUIDE:

Refer to these steps to keep young innovators on track as they create:

1.  Choose a color for your collage.

2.  Take pictures of a variety of objects of your chosen color.

  • Support being reflective—If kids are rushing through taking all their pictures, encourage them to stop and consider multiple options for each object.
  • Ask: What if you zoom in/out? Try a different angle? Place the object in a different part of the frame?
  • Ask: What types of objects or shots do you think might make your photos more interesting?

3.  Upload your pictures to a photo collage editing application.

4.  Arrange your photos in an eye-catching way.

  • Ask: What do you like about how your collage looks so far? What do you want to keep adjusting?

More Ideas:

Every project presents opportunities to add your own twists or extensions. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Innovate On! Create more photo collages based on other colors. You can also try other themes like a photo collage of all shadows, reflections, or a certain kind of texture.
  • Add text to your work of art. Maybe you want to add an inspirational message, a fun quote, some words about how the color you chose makes you feel, or your name.
  • Courageously share your collage. You can print it or share it digitally. Photo collages make great posters and gifts!

Wrap Up Questions:

Lock in the learning by asking kids these questions about their project and how they practiced the featured Innovator’s Mindset element:

  • What’s your favorite part about your collage? Why do you like it?
  • How were you reflective as you took and arranged your pictures?  What kinds of things were you thinking about? What discoveries did you make about how to make things look interesting?

SHARE!

The last step in the Gallieo Innovator’s Process is SHARE. Great learning can come from sharing successes and failures—to solidify your own experience as an innovator and to inspire others.
