Step up your duct tape design skills with a pair of durable DIY sandals. Start from the ground up with a sturdy, water-resistant sole, crafted from cardboard and covered in colorful tape. Master duct tape construction techniques to fashion fastening straps across the top and around the heel, then BE REFLECTIVE as you try them on, testing for fit and tweaking for comfort. Embellish your sweet sandals with permanent-marker patterns, duct-tape decals or your own personal footwear logo!
NOTE: Kids will likely need a little extra time after class to finish their second sandal.
While we offer a similar class for younger kids, the pacing and content of this class is carefully calibrated for rising 6th–8th graders.
Check to see if your child can rip or cut a 4″ piece of duct tape off a roll by themselves. If they can’t (or if it’s tricky), use one of these methods to create a duct tape dispenser at their workstation before class:
– Easy: Turn a chair or small table sideways and loop the duct tape roll(s) over a leg.
– Less easy: Tape something long and rigid to the top of their workstation (ideally something wide at one end, like a wooden spoon), so that the wide end extends off the side of the table to hold the tape roll(s). Use a tape plus sign on the other end for extra stability. (Use painter’s tape if you’re worried about residue on your table.)
