Safety Checklist Galileo Camps

Camp Safety Checklist

Galileo’s commitment to the safety for each of our campers and staff at all of our locations means we ensure camp staff are regularly trained and uphold the highest standards in camper safety management, camp facility safety and emergency response protocols.

The Galileo camp safety checklist illustrates just some of the primary elements we follow each day across our camp facilities:

HEALTH SAFETY

  • Health History information is collected for every camper & reviewed in advance of camp start each week.
  • Reduce the spread of communicable illness or disease by facilitating regular hand washing and cleaning of facilities.
  • Minimize the risk to campers with food allergies and dietary restrictions.
  • Camp is 100% nut-free.
  • All staff receive training on identifying the symptoms of anaphylaxis reaction and how to use an EpiPen. EpiPens are carried by the staff member responsible for the camper at any moment during the day.

CAMPER MANAGEMENT

  • Designated camper-to-staff ratios are always maintained. No camper is ever alone with a single staffer.
  • While supervising campers or working near camp exits/boundaries, staff use a combination of the following practices:
    • Position themselves between campers & exits.
    • Set expectations with campers regarding areas that are off limits.
    • Use cones to create physical barriers.
    • Visually scan the entire group every three minutes.
    • Conduct camper headcount every ten minutes and before/after transitions.
  • Campers must ask permission to leave the visual range of their group (e.g. going to the bathroom, getting a drink of water or something from their backpack, going to the office, etc.).
    • PreK-2nd grade campers will always be in direct staff supervision. Bathroom breaks are incorporated into transitions to facilitate this.
    • 3rd grade+ campers may use the buddy system for bathroom and water breaks.
  • Only adults who are on the authorized pick-up list and show photo ID can pick-up campers at check-out.
  • Adult visitors to camp must have approval from Galileo HQ and/or the Camp Director before being allowed on campus.

FACILITY & OPERATIONAL SAFETY

  • Visual scan and walk of the campus every morning before campers arrive to ensure a physically and emotionally safe environment for campers.
  • Model and reinforce safe use of all curriculum materials and tools, including glue guns and hand tools.
  • Facilitate a safe and fun water day experience for campers; and require campers to wear shoes at all times.
  • Monitor the impact heat may have, and adjust camp activities appropriately. Supervise campers applying their own sunscreen.
