"My son loved this zoo design class. He was completely engaged, encouraged to participate and be creative and was super proud of his project! He was able to participate with minimal supervision and kept working even after the class was over. "

What You'll Do

Let your imagination run wild as you build the zoo of your dreams. BE VISIONARY in designing an original layout and deciding which creatures (real or imaginary) will live there. Learn paper crafting skills like tent folding to fashion 3D animals and tab folding for standing features like trees, ticket booths and gift shops. Experiment with color and texture techniques as you embellish each habitat by drawing in sand, water, rocks or plants to bring your fiercely inventive creation to life.

NOTE: While we offer a similar class for older kids, the pacing and content of this class is carefully calibrated for rising 1st graders.

What You'll Need

Materials
  • 1 piece of cardboard, at least 11 x 15″ (can be 1-3″ bigger in either direction); folds are OK if it’s cut from a box—just aim for the smoothest piece possible
  • 4-5 sheets standard-size paper (preferably a mix of white and colored; at least 2 white)
  • Glue (glue stick preferred)
  • Scissors
  • Pencil Eraser
  • 1 set of drawing tools (markers preferred)
Technology
  • Computer or tablet with speaker and camera
  • Internet access
  • Zoom application installed
    • Signed in with your child’s name
    • Unmuted (the instructor will manage class muting/unmuting)

What You'll Take Away arrow

  • Paper folding and drawing techniques
  • The skills to be visionary and turn your ideas into reality
  • A wild, wonderful 3D zoo of your own design
